New Delhi, June 6: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met the families of the farmers martyred in the police firing in Mandsaur last year during an agitation.

The anniversary of the Mandsaur firing comes amid a countrywide 10-day strike by farmers demanding a complete loan waiver, implementation of recommendations of Swaminathan Commission and better remuneration for produce.

Later in a day, he will address the Kisan Samriddhi Sankalp Rally at Khokhra (Piplia Mandi) in Mandsaur at 1 p.m.

Earlier last week, the Congress Chief had said that he will highlight the issues related to agriculture in the country during his adrress.

“Everyday, about 35 farmers commit suicide in our country. To attract government’s attention towards the agrarian crisis, farmers are forced to protest for 10 days”, he tweeted.

The Congress President’s remarks came a day after the farmers in the agrarian states of Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh on Friday launched the 10-day Kisan Avkash, a call given by various farmer organisations in different states, dumping their produce, milk and other food items on the roads.
