Rahul Gandhi is set to be elevated as Congress President after party vice-president Gandhi returns here from his European trip on January 8.
The process of the much-delayed organizational elections in Congress will be conducted and Gandhi’s choices from the younger crowd will be given the prominent posts and responsiblities.
Rahul who has agressively brought change in Congress party in the national level by introducing key changes at the grassroot level , is set to bring in new,young and energetic core team.
Rahul initiated the interview process of party leaders and the reshuffle in the party rank and file is s set to happen in the second and third week of January.
So second and third week of January is set to be hectic as new developments will be seen in Congress party involving the restructuring of the organisation .
After the improved performance by Congress in Bihar elections and Chhattisgarh panchayat elections, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi decided to hold internal elections for AICC posts and seats for the Congress Working Committee (CWC). The CWC has not held internal elections for about two decades.
Sonia was elected Congress president in 2010 for a five-year period and her tenure ended in 2015 but was extended for one year. According to the schedule issued by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in March, the elections for the post of Congress president were to be held between September 21-30.
The CWC meeting revived the active members’ category, reverted office-bearers’ term to three years and increased quota for Dalits, Tribals, minorities and OBCs in the party from 20 per cent to 50 per cent.Reverting to a three-year term for office-bearers from existing five years.
Congress seams ready to challenge BJP in Kerala , Assam,West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where lections are scheduled in 2016.
On December 27, Rahul took to Twitter to announce that he will be travelling to Europe for a ‘few days’, the first time that he has gone public about a trip abroad.
Sources in the party say that the Congress Vice President could be back any time after January 8 following which a meeting of Congress Working Committee may also happen.
Rahul Gandhi will be elevated to the post of president of the Congress, senior party leader AK Antony said without specifying any time frame for the change of guard.
The leader felt that the elevation of Gandhi should be happening ‘sooner than later’ but refused to attach a time line.
“He (Rahul) is ready to take on the mantle. It is wrong to say that he does not want to become president. There is also no truth in suggestions that Gandhi may wait till the completion of assembly polls in Assam before he is elevated as Congress president,” a party functionary said on the condition of anonymity.
