Bhiwandi, Nov 16, 2016: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was given bail by Bhiwandi court on Wednesday in a defamation case registered by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker for his remarks blaming the organisation for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
The bail was granted on a personal surety and next date of hearing has been set for January 28.
The case filed by RSS functionary Rajesh Kunte claiming that during March 2014, Rahul in his election speech at Bhiwandi blamed the RSS for their hand in the assassination of the father of the nation.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had put a stay on the proceedings against him but Rahul withdrew his petition from the court in September saying that he would face the trial. The move came after the Apex Court denied to interfere in the criminal proceedings pending against Rahul in the trial court. He submitted before the court that he stood by ‘every word of his statement’.
He reached the court in neighbouring Thane district at 10:45am. He will leave for Delhi immediately after the court proceedings as Parliament’s Winter Session starts today, said state Congress sources.
