Quota bill challenged in Supreme Court

New Delhi, Jan 10: The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 that provides 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections in the general category, has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

NGO Youth for Equality and Kaushal Kant Mishra filed a plea in the apex court.

The petition states that the bill violates prime feature of the Constitution as a reservation on economic grounds cannot be limited to the people belonging to general categories and the 50 per cent ceiling limit cannot be breached.

This comes a day after, the Rajya Sabha passed the bill following a marathon nine-hour debate.

The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Bill gives 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and education for the economical weaker section of general category.
