Quota agitation : Gujjars block railway tracks in Rajasthan, 4 Trains cancelled

Rajasthan, Feb 8 : Demanding reservation for five communities including Gujjars, hundreds of people from the Gujjar community in Rajasthan are protesting at railway tracks at Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan.

CPRO West Central Railway (WCR) said that four trains have been cancelled, seven trains diverted following reservation movement by members of Gujjar community between Sawai Madhopur & Bayana railway stations in Rajasthan.

The agitators have blocked railway tracks in Rajasthan’s Swai Madhopur district which has affected the train movement on the Delhi-Mumbai line.

The Gujjars argued that if 10 per cent reservation for the economically backward can be passed, then why not for them.

The protesters are demanding five per cent separate reservation for Gujjars, Raika-Rebari, Gadia Luhar, Banjara and Gadaria in government jobs and admission in educational institutions. The Rajasthan government had promised the Gujjar community of 5 per cent reservation in a special category in 2017 after the agitation..

While four trains have been terminated earlier than their destination, seven have been diverted and one cancelled by Railways keeping in mind the agitation.

“We want 5 per cent reservation. The government hasn’t responded to my request. So, I am going to start an agitation,” Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla said.

The protest has been relaunched because the Gujjars gave a 20-day “ultimatum” to the Rajasthan government to clear its stand on reservation to the communities in government jobs and educational institutes, but the deadline lapsed, following which Bainsla held a ‘Maha Panchayat’ at Malarna Dungar in Sawai Madhopur district and started the sit-in dharna with his supporters.
