New Delhi, May 31: Every year, May 31 marks the World No Tobacco Day. This day promotes and encourages abstinence from any sort of tobacco products. Tobacco is a killer, there is no doubt about it.
In India, number of deaths per year from Tobacco consumption amounting to more than 10 lakh. In Kerala alone, it takes away 40,000 lives a year.
A sincere symbol of World No Tobacco day is an ashtray bearing fresh flowers as it prevents smokers from stubbing their cigarettes in an ash tray that contains something so fresh and natural.
The World Health Organisation has held that taxing tobacco products is the most effective way to reduce tobacco use by making it unaffordable. The decision of the GST Council to put cigarettes and pan masala at the highest 28% slab plus cess is a welcome step.
