Chandigarh, July 7: Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana K.P. Singh today constituted a committee to review farmers’ suicides in the state and prepare a comprehensive report on the issue.
The committee will be chaired by Congress legislator Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, and members are legislators Nathu Ram, Kuljit Singh Nagra, Nazar Singh Manshahia, and Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra.
“The committee has been constituted in compliance of a resolution moved by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in Vidhan Sabha (assembly) on June 19,” an assembly spokesperson told media.
The panel will meet families of deceased farmers to probe the reasons.
The committee would subsequently prepare a detailed report with suggestions, recommendations and measures to curb farmer suicides in the state, the spokesperson stated.
“The committee will find reasons behind the poor economic condition of farmers and suggest ways to bail out this community from economic crisis,” the spokesperson further added.
