Punjab polls: Congress releases fourth list; Sidhu not in the list yet


New Delhi, Jan 14, 2017: The Congress on Friday announced its fourth list of candidates for the Punjab assembly elections to be held on February 4.

The party named eight more contenders and replaced two nominees to the 100 already announced but former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s name was missing from the list.

Former party MLA Rajkumar Gupta has replaced Tejinder Bittu in Jalandhar North, Nirmal Singh Nimma has replaced Joginder Singh Panjgrain from Bhadaur, which is a reserved seat.

Sidhu met Congress VP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday afternoon for 30 minutes to discuss the date of his formal induction into the party.

However, the Congress yet not announce its candidate for Amritsar (East) assembly constituency in its fourth list of 10 candidates released where Sidhu is likely to contest and currently his wife is the MLA from there.

Also, the party has not declared its nominee from Jalandhar Cantt from where Pargat Singh who recently joined Congress along with Sidhu had won as SAD nominee last time.

Meanwhile, at the AICC briefing, here party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi steered clear of questions as to when Sidhu is joining the party and from where he will contest.
