Chandigarh, July 5: In a bid to curb usage of drugs, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday issued notifications mandating an annual drug test for all government employees, from police personnel to clerks.

On the related note, the Chief Secretary has been directed to work out the modalities and issue a necessary order.

The Chief Minister tweeted “We’ve decided to go for dope tests for all govt. employees, including policemen, as part of our fight against drugs. I’ve asked the Chief Secy. to work out modalities for screening of employees at the time of recruitment, promotion and annual medical examination where applicable”

As per the notification, the employees will be tested for drugs before being considered for promotion and it will be conducted apart from the annual medical check.

The Punjab government on Monday decided to recommend the death penalty for peddling or smuggling.

Following this decision, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh yesterday wrote to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for approving death penalty to drug-related-offenders on first conviction only.

A Punjab Special Task Force had successfully blocked trans-border and interstate-border drugs supply, with 16,305 cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and around 18,800 persons were held since March 16, 2017.
