Punjab on high alert, orders to evacuate villages

Punjab government has instructed to evacuate the villages in a 10-km belt along the border with Pakistan.

This came as Indian Army carried out the surgical strikes across the LOC.

The Union home ministry on Thursday informed the Punjab government to get the villages evacuated which are near the border.

The announcement was made by local authorities using loudspeakers guiding people to leave their houses and move to a safer place. The schools and other institutions which fall under the border belt have been closed. The districts near the borders include Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Abohar and Ferozepur.

According to media reports, Border Security Force (BSF) along with the border belt are tightening the security and are deploying the troops.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has called an emergency meeting of the cabinet on Thursday evening.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has cancelled the ‘Retreat’ ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border joint check-post (JCP) at Attari, 30 km from Amritsar, officials said on Thursday.
