Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, began brain storming sessions with various groups of party leaders at the UPCC headquarters here on Friday.

Priyanka arrived on a two-day visit in the morning and went straight to the residence of former union minister Sheila Kaul at Gokhale Marg.

The residence is being spruced up for Priyanka who plans to spend more time in Lucknow in the coming months. Sheila Kaul was the maternal aunt of Indira Gandhi.

Priyanka then paid floral tributes to Dr B.R. Ambedkar on his death anniversary before she initiated the meeting with the party’s strategy group.

She discussed preparations for the proposed December 14 rally of the Congress in Delhi and asked leaders to ensure maximum participation from UP.

Party sources said that she also sought suggestions from members of the group about reviving the party.

She discussed the party’s strategy in the prevailing political situation in the state and referred to recent incidents like Mainpuri and Unnao where women were targeted.

Sources said that Priyanka asked party leaders to adopt an aggressive posture in cases where the common people are at the receiving end. She said that efforts must be made to ensure the participation of cadres in party programmes.

She said that the revival of the Congress was necessary to defeat rivals and party workers must be motivated to participate in party programmes.

Prominent leaders who attended the strategy group meeting included UPCC president Ajay Kumar Lallu, CLP leader Aradhan Misra, former union ministers Rajiv Shukla, Jitin Prasada, Pradeep Jain Aditya, and state party leaders Imran Masood, Raj Kishore Singh, R K Chaudhary among others.

Priyanka, according to party sources, will hold marathon meetings till late in the night with party leaders.

“She is concerned about the December 14 rally and wants maximum participation from every district of UP,” said a leader who attended the meeting.

Surprisingly, there were no crowds at the UPCC headquarters on Friday, despite Priyanka Gandhi’s presence.

Most of the senior leaders did not turn up to welcome her and the youth leaders also stayed away.

“The UPCC president has not asked us to be present and we do not want to be shooed away if we go there,” said a Youth Congress leader.

Population Control Bill

New Delhi, Aug 10 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anil Agarwal has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce the Population Control Bill in the next session of the Parliament.

In a letter addressed to Modi, the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP said “population explosion” needs to be checked, and the only way to make India ‘Atmanirbhar’ or self-reliant to is to introduce the population control law.

“Everyone wants the population control law… be Hindu or Muslim. This law will eliminate most of the country’s problems. China (the world’s most populous country) will soon be left behind by the rate at which the population in India is increasing,” Agarwal told IANS.

“Arable land in the country is also continuously decreasing. If there is no population control law in time, many problems will arise,” the BJP MP said.

The letter addressed to PM Modi reads: “On August 15, 2019, you talked about population control while addressing the country from the Red Fort. The time has now come… I urge you to bring an effective population control bill in the next session of the Parliament.”

Agarwal said Modi stays firm on his promise — whether it is on Triple Talaq, Article 370 or Ram temple.

New Delhi, Aug 10 : After DMK leader Kanimozhi cried of Hindi imposition while narrating an incident in an airport where she was allegedly asked about her citizenship, the BJP took a sharp jibe at her, alleging that the southern party’s charge is motivated with electoral benefits in mind.

The saffron party fielded its tallest southern leader and General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh who took to Twitter to counter Kanimozhi’s charge, saying “Assembly elections are 8 months away … Campaign starts.”

Tamil Nadu is tipped to go the polls in the first half of next year with the BJP looking to make an entry into the southern state.

This whole row erupted after the DMK leader said that a CISF officer allegedly asked her if she was an Indian after the MP asked to be communicated in either Tamil or English, citing her inability to talk in Hindi.

“I would like to know from when being an Indian is equal to knowing Hindi,” she said, sparking off a political row with other southern leaders like Karni Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, joining the bandwagon to ‘condemn’ the act.

While the CISF, which is entrusted with the security in most Indian airports, reached out to her seeking details, BJP’s Santhosh didn’t spare the opportunity, saying: “CISF has asked her to give details. Let her give the details. Action will follow. Let’s discuss about arrogance at that time.”
