New Delhi, June 21: President Pranab Mukherjee urged the nation to turn yoga into a habit in order to lead a healthy life on Wednesday.
Kicking off the third edition of the International Yoga Day celebrations at Rashtrapati Bhawan here, Mukherjee said the ancient Indian practice was useful for curing physical as well as mental disorders.
“In ancient India, all disciplines were integrated to appear as one in the form of yoga. I advise you to continue practising yoga throughout the year,” Mukherjee told a gathering of enthusiastic children, youths and elderly people.
“Regular practice of yoga will not only help you have a fit body and a sound mind, but it will also take care of all disorders — mental and otherwise,” he added.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat led an event which drew nearly 1,000 people, including schoolchildren, who did yogic exercises amid cloudy skies.
Ministers in the Congress government gave a miss to the event that was held on the Ridge.
“Yoga is the gateway to perfect health,” Devvrat said in a brief address to mark the third edition of the International Yoga Day.
The event was organised jointly by the Rotary Club of Shimla and public sector Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL), a company that owns and operates India’s largest hydropower project in the state.
The Mukherjee wished everyone a healthy life and give credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the initiative to propose celebration of the International Yoga Day on June 21, which was later accepted by the UN.
