President Mukherjee, PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Condole Jayalalithaa’s Death

New Delhi, Dec 6, 2016: On the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and many other leaders of political parties on Tuesday expressed deep sadness and pays homage to Amma.

President Pranab Mukherjee said he was “extremely sad” as the country lost “a visionary leader” in the death J. Jayalalithaa.

In a condolence message to Vidyasagar Rao, the Tamil Nadu Governor, Mukherjee said the country “has lost an icon who was loved and admired by millions”.

He said Jayalalithaa was “a visionary leader and administrator who distinguished herself through her political acumen and people friendly programmes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter and said:

Congress president Sonia Gandhi condoled the death of Amma by saying she lived her life with same “indomitable courage with which she battled her last illness”.

“I am deeply grieved to learn of the passing away of Selvi J. Jayalalithaa,” said Gandhi in a statement.

“As the leader of the AIADMK and as four-times Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, she had a unique and deep empathy with the needs and hopes of the people, and put in place policies that immeasurably improved their lives.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed sadness at the death of Jayalalithaa, saying, “She was a powerful voice for the weaker sections of the society.”

“She always worked for the benefit of the poor and needy. She has left an indelible mark in Tamil Nadu politics with her enduring legacy. Selvi Jayalalithaa was one of the most iconic political figures of India who had an enormous impact on the people of Tamil Nadu,” Mr Singh said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also took to Twitter to condole the death of the AIADMK leader.

He tweeted:

Jayalalithaa died at Apollo hospital on Monday night, a day after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was 68. She was admitted in hospital since September 22.
