Politicisation of surgical strikes continues

The remarks of Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on surgical strikes have become a tip of the spear for political debates  after foreign Secretary S Jaishankar accepted that “target specific, limited-calibre, counter-terrorist operations” have been conducted in the past but were never made public in response to a question to the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs.

After the surgical strikes, Manohar Parrikar had overtly accepted felicitation for surgical strikes and asserted that it was the first time surgical strikes had taken place in the history of the Indian army. He went overboard by saying that previous army operations were locally executed by commanders without involving the government. It was under the leadership of PM Modi that Army could dare to conduct the strikes, said the defense Minister.

Instilling more fire to the ongoing spike of comments on surgical strikes Goa BJP claimed that RSS-trained prime minister Modi and Parrikar and thus they could inspire Army for surgical strikes.

“I wonder, with the combination of a Prime Minister who comes from Mahatma Gandhi’s home state, and I, Defence Minister, coming from Goa which never had any martial race, and surgical strikes. Maybe the RSS teaching was at the core, but this was quite a different kind of combination,” said Parrikar at a function in Ahmedabad.

In exact contradiction to what BJP and their allies are claiming, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said yesterday: Professionally done, target-specific, limited-calibre counter-terrorist operations have been carried out across the LoC in the past too, but this is for the first time that the government has made it public.

Earlier too, ex National security advisor Shivshankar Menon had said that Ginger Operations were conducted across LoC in 2011 under UPA government but were never publicised as a national security policy. The current defense minister, however, rejected the claim.

Taking a timely jibe, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Sing tweeted who trained those who conducted earlier strikes.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, the  statement by foreign secretary has exposed BJP president Amit Shah’s and defense Minister Manohar Parrikar’s lies.

He also said: Hope FS Jaishankar won’t get axed like Sujatha Singh for speaking the truth qua valour of Armed Forces and exposing BJP’s deception.

BSP’s chief Mayawati also accused Parrikar for degrading the country’s armed forces. She alleged that BJP is politicising the strikes keeping and eye on upcoming elections in Uttar Pardesh, Goa and Gujrat.

She slammed defense Minister for de-crediting Indian Army for its operations. She insisted that earlier he gave credit to Modi and now to RSS teachings which is completely derogatory and condemnable.
