Polio virus detected in Hyderabad water sample, Telangana declares ‘global emergency’


The Telangana government declared  an alert in the city after a particular type of polio virus was detected in water sample collected from a drain.A mass vaccination drive will be conducted from June 20 to 26,in which more than three lakh children will be  vaccinated in the city and Ranga Redd

The Telangana government on Tuesday declared a “global emergency” after an active strain of wild poliovirus (P2 strain) was found in a water sample collected from a drain in Hyderabad

Since the time polio was eradicated in the country in 2011, this is the first time that this particular strain of wild polio virus has been witnessed in more than five years.
Apart from declaring an alert, the government is also planning to launch a massive campaign against polio at children in the age group of six weeks to three years as part of preventive measures.
