Police questions Boney Kapoor, Dubai Public Prosecution begins probe

Dubai, Feb 27: The Dubai Public Prosecution has commenced a probe into the untimely demise of Bollywood actress Sridevi, who was found dead in a bathtub at her hotel room here, a media report said on Tuesday.

Sources at the Dubai Police informed Khaleej Times that the Public Prosecution will conduct further investigations with regard to circumstances that resulted to the 54-year-old actress’s “accidental drowning” after losing consciousness.

The Dubai Media Office said in a tweet: “Dubai police assert that the case file was forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Dubai to take the necessary legal action in accordance with such cases.” At 6 p.m., Monday, the case was still referred to the public prosecution for further investigation.”

The overall investigation into her death began early Sunday morning, and the late actor’s body has been at the General Department of Forensic Evidence, Dubai, since 2.30 a.m., on Sunday, reports Khaleej Times.

The Police has also recorded the statement of Sridevi’s producer husband Boney Kapoor.

Sharing the image of the forensic report, the media publication stated that Sridevi, who had traces of alcohol in her blood, lost balance and fell into the bathtub and drowned.

Meanwhile politician Amar Singh said in a statement that,”Sridevi ji did not drink hard liquor,she used to have wine sometimes like me& like many others in public life”.

Sridevi, 54, died on Saturday night. It was earlier reported that she died due to cardiac arrest.

The 54-year-old, who had dominated the silver screen in the 80s, had gone to Dubai to attend a family wedding.

The last rites are expected to be held on Tuesday at Pawan Hans crematorium, Mumbai.

In a moving gesture, Indian industrial magnate Anil Ambani sent an aircraft to Dubai to bring back her body to India later on Sunday.

Sridevi was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor’s cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi.

From Indian stars to Indian political personalities to Pakistani icons, her fans and admirers expressed shock and disbelief.

Celebrities and fans flocked to the bungalow of Anil Kapoor, brother-in-law to the actress, to pour in their condolences.

Actress Tabu, director Farah Khan, choreographer Saroj Khan, actor Farhan Akhtar along with mother Honey Irani are among the celebrities arrived at the Kapoor’s residence to be a part of the ritual meeting.

Born in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on August 13, 1963, Sridevi began her career at the age of four in the devotional film “Thunaivan”. That marked the beginning of a journey in filmdom that saw her work across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi productions, leading her to become one of the most formidable actresses of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood — in fact, the only female “superstar” the industry has seen.

She is remembered for her performances in some of the iconic Bollywood films like “Mr. India”, “Nagina”, “Sadma”, “ChalBaaz”, “Chandni”, “Khuda Gawah”, among many others in different Indian languages.

Sridevi, who made a comeback to Bollywood in 2012 with “English Vinglish” after a long break of 15 years, was last seen in “Mom” in 2017.
