Mumbai, June 3: Khar police recently registered an FIR against veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor for allegedly cutting down more branches of trees than permitted by the civic authority.
Police also registered the FIR against the contractor, appointed by him, under Section 8, read with Section 21 of the Maharashtra Protection and Preservation of Tree Act.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had filed a complaint against Kapoor for chopping off six branches that were coming in the way of construction work at his Pali Hill bungalow in suburban Bandra, police said today.
Kapoor said, “I had taken all required permission to do so, which I have provided them to see. This is plain harassment from jealous neighbours which was expected.”
Police said they will record statements of all concerned and accordingly decide the action. Civic officials said the tree-cutting was illegal and they were not convinced with the actor’s explanation, so they insisted that police register the FIR.Kapoor had obtained permission for cutting six branches but it was found that more had been chopped off, said Ramchandra Jadhav, Senior Police Inspector of Khar Police Station.
Police had initially registered a non-cognizable (NC) offence against the actor, he said.
Now, a case has been registered against Kapoor under the Preservation of Trees Act, the official said, adding a probe was on.
