Kevadiya, Oct 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the 182-metre high ‘Statue of Unity’ ‘ in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

“This is a project that we had thought about during the time when I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. To build the #StatueOfUnity, lakhs of farmers from all over India came together, gave their tools, portions of soil and thus, a mass movement started”, PM Modi said after unveiling the statue.

“if it was not for Sardar Sahab’s resolve, then we Indians would have to take visa to see the Gir lions, pray at Somnath, or to see Hyderabad’s Charminar”, he added.

The Prime Minister further said that “Sardar Sahab ke avahan par desh ke saikdon rajwadaon ne tyag ki misaal qayam ki thi. Hume is tyag ko bhi nahi bhoolna chahiye”.

Constructed on Sadhu Bet Island on Narmada river, the imposing statue is the world’s tallest.

The bronze figure is almost 29 metres taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha that stands at 153 metres, and almost twice as high as the 93-metre Statue of Liberty in New York.

Three Indian Air Force planes flew past the Patel figure and created the tricolour in the sky after Modi unveiled the statue.

According to the reports, the statue has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure.
