New Delhi, Dec 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his death anniversary and said the nation was indebted to him.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also remembered the Iron Man of India and said Sardar Patel was an exceptional leader who laid the foundations of modern India and placed nationalism at its core.

Sardar Patel was the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Indian National Congress. He was also founding father of the Republic of India who played a leading role in the country’s struggle for independence and guided its integration into a united, independent nation. He was called the ‘Iron Man of India’, and was often addressed as Sardar, died on December 15, 1950 after suffering from a massive heart attack at the age of 75.
