New Delhi, March 31: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday met Tamil Nadu farmers protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for drought relief funds.

The farmers from Tamil Nadu are sitting here from past 2 weeks and demanding drought relief fund from the Centre.

Congress VP joined the protestors and sat with them to listen to their grievances. Talking to media, Rahul said, “PM has given debt relief to richest people in the country, why not for people who have built this country, the farmers.”

He also said, “This government is anti-farmer. Over the last three years the Government of India has given debt relief of Rs. 1 lakh to the richest people of this country. I don’t understand why this discrimination is taking place.”

He also said: Inki (TN farmers) awaaz na Hindustan ki sarkar aur na hi PM ko sunayi deti hai. PM ki zimedaari hai ki inki baat sunein. (Their voice is being unheard by the government of India and by the Prime Minister. It is responsibility of PM to hear them.)

He said, “There are three demands drought relief, waive of loans and support to the farmers. Solution needs to be worked out. This is completely disrespectful to the people of Tamil Nadu.”

Earlier DMK Parliamentarian Kanimozhi also met the protesting Tamil Nadu farmers today. She said her party has frequently raised farmers’ issue in Parliament but the government has refused to respond so far.

They are protesting for more than 18 days demanding loan waiver. Crops have dried and there is no water. Tamil Nadu has not seen such a drought. The Central Government has not responded so far. The farmers are not being assured from the Centre,” Kanimozhi told the media here.

The Tamil Nadu farmers from Cauvery belt are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for 2 weeks now. They are demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre. Besidesm farm loan waiver, they are demanding setting up of Cauvery Management Board.

Since March 21, the TN farmers are protesting in the national capital with human skulls which they claim are of farmers who committed suicide.
