Periyar Statue Vandalised in Chennai’s Tiruppur

Chennai , Sep 17 : Statue of Dravidian icon and social reformer EVR Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar,was found vandalised by unidentified miscreants on Monday , with a pair of slippers kept on the top of it in Chennai’s Tiruppur.

Residents of Tirupur, who were celebrating the 140th birthday of Periyar and had plans to garland to the statue were in utter shock to see Periyar statue vandalised

Police have started an investigation.

Leaders of various parties have been paying floral tributes to statues of of E V Ramaswamy, popularly known as EeVeRa and Periyar installed in different parts of the State.The miscreants had also chiseled a few parts from the statue’s head and placed a pair of slippers atop it.

A similar incident was reported at Anna Salai, a  man who threw footwear at the statue of Periyar at Anna Salai, Chennai, has been arrested.

Condemning the act as barbaric, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters this morning that any insult to Periyar would be an insult to Tamils as a whole.

He said strict action would be taken against such miscreants.

Some miscreants had reportedly placed footwear on the statue of Periyar, installed at the Island Ground Park in Dharapuram.
