Actor Huma Qureshi, who worked with Anurag Kashyap on Gangs of Wasseypur, has said that she is furious at her name being dragged into accusations of sexual misconduct made against the filmmaker, by an actor named Payal Ghosh.

Huma took to Twitter on Tuesday to share her statement, in which she emphasised on the need to uphold the sanctity of the Me Too movement. She wrote, “Anurag and I last worked together in 2012-13 and he is a dear friend and an extremely talented director. In my personal experience and to my knowledge he has neither misbehaved with me or anyone else. However, anyone who claims to be abused must report it to the authorities , the police and the judiciary.”

She continued, “I chose not to comment till now because I don’t believe in social media fights and media trials. I feel really angry at being dragged into this mess. I feel angry not just for myself but also every woman whose years of hard work and struggle gets reduced to such baseless conjecture and allegations in their workplace. Please let’s refrain from this narrative. It is the joint responsibility of women and men both to carefully protect the sanctity of #MeToo. This is my final response. Please do not approach me to make any more statements on this matter.”

On Saturday, Payal took to Twitter, and tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wrote, “Anurag Kashyap has forced himself on me and extremely badly. Narendra Modi ji, kindly take action and let the country see the demon behind this creative guy. I am aware that it can harm me and my security is at risk. Pls help!” Payal, in an interview to Bollywood Hungama, claimed that he told her that female actors such as Richa Chaddha, Mahie Gill and Huma would perform sexual favours for him and he expected the same from her.

Anurag’s lawyer issued a statement denying the allegations. The statement read: ‘My client, Anurag Kashyap, has been deeply pained by the false allegations of sexual misconduct that have recently surfaced against him. These allegations are completely false, malicious and dishonest. It is sad that a social movement as important as the #metoo movement has been co-opted by vested interests and reduced to a mere tool for character assassination. Fictitious allegations of this nature seriously undermine the movement and seek to unconscionably trade upon the pain and trauma of actual victims of sexual harassment and abuse. My client has been advised about his rights and remedies in law and intends to pursue them to the fullest extent – Priyanka Khimani.”

Several film personalities, including Mahie, who also worked with Anurag on Gangs of Wasseypur, have provided testimonials for Anurag. Kangana Ranaut, however, has voiced her support for the accuser.

Both of Anurag’s ex-wives — film editor Aarti Bajaj and actor Kalki Koechlin — have slammed the allegations, and have hailed Anurag as a champion of women both on and off the screen. “Dear Anurag,” Kalki wrote in a statement. “Don’t let this social media circus get to you, you have fought for the freedom of women in your scripts, you’ve defended their integrity in your professional space as well as in your personal life. I have been witness to it, in the personal and professional space you have always seen me as your equal, you have stood up for my integrity even after our divorce, and you have supported me when I felt unsafe in a work environment even before we got together.”

In fresh war of words, Kangana calls Uddhav Thackeray worst product of nepotism’

Mumbai, Oct 26 : Hitting back at Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for his comments at a rally, actor Kangana Ranaut on Monday described him as the worst product of nepotism and said her state Himachal Pradesh is the land of the gods not ganja fields’.

The actor, who has been vocal about her criticism of the state government’s handling of the investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and labelled Bollywood a drug haven, lashed out against Thackeray a day after his Dussehra address.

“People who have no means of livelihood in their home come to Mumbai and betray it. Calling Mumbai PoK is in fact the failure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He had said he would get back PoK into India,” Thackeray said on Sunday.

Ranaut’s remark equating Mumbai with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir had led to a furore, drawing the battle-lines between the Shiv Sena and her.

“Those crying for justice for Bihar’s son are indulging in character assassination of Maharashtra’s son,” the chief minister said at the Sena’s annual Dussehra rally,, breaking his silence on allegations against his son Aaditya Thackeray in the Rajput death case.

Ranaut, known for her provocative statements, struck back in a series of tweets and a video on the social media platform and said Thackeray had abused her in his speech by calling her namak haraam’.

“As a chief minister, you have let down an entire state only because you are angry with a woman who is of your son’s age. You were very angry with me when I compared Mumbai with (Pok) after I was threatened because slogans of ‘Free Kashmir’ were raised there. Your ‘Sonia Sena’ had defended all that, that’s why I had compared it with PoK, she said in the video.

The actor said Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had abused her and now it was Thackeray.

Shame on you, I am your son’s age. This is how you speak to a self-made single woman. Chief minister, you are the worst product of nepotism. She also took umbrage at Thackeray’s reference to ganja fields’ in Himachal Pradesh and said it is actually dev bhoomi’, land of the gods.

What I want to tell you is: governments come and go. You are just a government servant and the people of Maharashtra are not happy with you. Governments come and go but if a person loses respect, he can’t get it back, she said.

The actor said opportunities that Mumbai offered belong to everyone and both the Himachal Pradesh and Mumbai were her homes.

Ranaut has been in the headlines for locking horns with the Shiv Sena following Rajput’s death, be it for criticising Mumbai Police over its investigation into the case or lambasting the film industry for alleged drug use.

Ranaut had again compared Mumbai with PoK after the Shiv Sena-led BMC demolished “illegal alterations” at her Bandra bungalow.

She also said the Maharashtra government was trying to put her in jail after a complaint against her at a Mumbai court for “spreading hate and breaking the brotherhood, integrity of the country” through her provocative statements.

Even though movie theatres are now open, only 7 per cent people are willing to go to watch a film there in the next 60 days, as per a survey.

Results of July, August and October survey by LocalCircles indicate that people continue to stay reluctant in going to theatres and multiplexes due to the Covid-19 scare.

Cinema halls across the states were allowed to reopen after seven months of the ongoing pandemic induced by the novel coronavirus.

Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are some of the states where theatres and multiplexes have started to function. Cinema halls remain closed in states like Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and many northeastern states.

LocalCircles conducted a survey to know if citizens if plan on visiting movie theatres in the next 2 months. The survey received 8,274 responses from across the country.

In the survey, citizens were asked, “now that the multiplexes and theatres are open in many states and the remaining states will also open them soon, will they be going to watch a movie in the next 60 days?”

However, only 4 per cent said they would go to watch if any new releases come and 3 per cent said they will go regardless of new or old movie. 74 per cent said they will not go while 2 per cent were unsure and 17 per cent said they don’t watch movies in theatre.

LocalCircles had conducted similar surveys during past few months to know how people plan to go out to watch movies when the theatres and multiplexes reopen. In the July survey, 72 per cent consumers had said that they will not go to theatres or multiplexes when they open, keeping the Covid-19 scenario in mind.

This number increased to 77 per cent in August and stands at 74 per cent in October.

Cinema halls claim to have taken various measures to ensure safety, such as sanitisation of their premises and other Covid-19 safety protocols. Among others, some of them have started the movie shows with 50 per cent of the total occupancy, staggered show timings, social distancing, thermal screening, adequate protection gear for the staff, etc.

But all said and done, it looks like people continue to be reluctant in going to a theatre or multiplex in the next 60 days, the survey said.

States that are considering opening multiplexes and cinema halls in the coming weeks may want to consider this consumer feedback and accordingly make their decision.
