Delhi, 30 Sept: Finally after four years main accused of the Park street gangrape case, Kader Khan has been arrested last night from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad division .
Apart from Khan, Police has also held another person Ali, who was accompanying Khan while he was hiding in Delhi.
Both are scheduled to be produced before a local court and will be brought to Kolkata on transit remand.
The arrest of the prime accused has triggered elation among the late rape victim’s family and supporters.
“I feel bad that she is not here to see this. She had to go through a lot. But she never lost hope,” the woman’s former counsel Anirban Guha Thakurta told the media here.
On February 20, 2012, Suzette Jordan, who decided to reveal her identity after the incident, was gang-raped at gunpoint in a moving car shockingly on the busy Park Street in Kolkata after she came out of a night club. Later, the Single mother of two girls fought for her rights and stood next to other rape victims and survivors. She started several anti-rape campaigns and emerged as a women’s rights activist.
Ms Jordan was working at the time as a counsellor at a helpline for victims of sexual and domestic violence.
The victim could not see justice delivered to her following her death due to meningitis at the age of 40.
On 10 December 2015, the city sessions court, Kolkata found all the five accused guilty and sentenced accused Naser Khan, Ruman Khan and Sumit Bajaj to 10 years of jail term. Of the 10 years, the three have already served four years in jail.
The incident took a controversial turn when the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the incident as ‘sajano ghotona’, meaning that the incident was staged and called the victim as a liar and accused her of trying to embarrass the government.
Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also had cast aspersions on her character, describing the incident to be a “sex deal gone wrong”.
