Panjab University students oppose fee hike, clash with cop

Chandigarh, April 11, 2017: Tension prevailed on the Panjab University campus today as students, protesting the fee hike for various courses, clashed with the police.

Police sources said that a few students were wounded after a baton charge and use of water cannons and tear-gas to disperse the agitators who had gathered near the Vice Chancellor’s office complex.

The protesting students threw stones at the police and broke window panes of the offices and damaged other university property.

Subsequently, a few students, who were being chased by the police, entered a gurdwara on the campus and took refuge there. To control the situation, police entered the gurdwara with lathis but have not entered the sanctum sanctorum of the Sikh religious place. The student leaders surrendered.

Teaching was affected in several departments on the Sector 14 campus of the university due to the protest shutdown called by the students.
