Pampore encounter ends, 2 militants killed

Jammu, Oct 12, 2016: The Army operation that lasted for almost 60 hours to flush out holed up terrorists in EDI building at Pampore near Srinagar is over and 2 terrorists are killed, confirmed GOC Victor Force Major General Ashok Narula.

The gun battle between terrorists and armed forces lasted for more than 2 days and the operation is termed as tricky. It was a second attack on the same building by terrorists this year.

Last year in February army lost 5 lives to a similar operation. Thus security forces have been more cautious this time in the combing operation. They used over 50 rockets, machines guns and explosives in efforts to kill or flush out the terrorists hiding inside the bashed building, used to offer vocational training to young Kashmiris.

On Monday, an army soldier was injured in the initial firing. Since then the army has also brought in special forces of the 9 Paramilitary unit for the operation. The rangers of the same unit had carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan last month.

Officials said the encounter has stretched on because the building offers a “bunker-like” protection to the terrorists. Seemingly well-stocked in ammunition and supplies, they have demonstrated a willingness to prolong the operation. Despite the building catching fire several times, terrorists have not come out.

There are no hostages, sources said, because classes have been suspended for more than three months because of the unrest in the Kashmir Valley that began with the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

The militants entered the building in Pampore at 6.30 am on Monday. The same institute had been targeted in a major attack in February. Five soldiers and a civilian were killed then; three terrorists were shot dead.
