New Delhi, May 24, 2016: The leaders of the opposition parties will meet on 26 May at the Parliament Library Building to decide on a joint presidential candidate for the upcoming Presidential election slated to be held in July 2017.

Most of the Opposition parties – from the Congress, the Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left parties to the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party – have expressed the importance of uniting against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

However, the ruling NDA at the Centre still maintained silence over its nominee for the presidential election.

There have been a series of names which have come up regarding this position, the names of former West Bengal governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and JD(U) veteran Sharad Yadav are reportedly coming up as possible nominees.

Earlier this month, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss a common Opposition candidate and conveyed that her party was in favour of a consensus candidate for the presidential election.

On May 21, BJP President Amit Shah had said that the party is yet to take a decision on its presidential candidate and rejected Shiv Sena’s proposal for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat’s name for the position.

Speaking on the nomination of a presidential candidate, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told media that the party along with all Opposition parties will work to build a majority opinion for a candidate with “unquestionable record of dedication and commitment to the founding principles of Constitution, bereft of political colour or pressure from the ruling dispensation”.
