Opposition demands Triple Talaq Bill be sent to Joint Select Committee

Triple Talaq

New Delhi, Dec 27: The Lok Sabha on Thursday began a discussion on the Triple Talaq Bill, that seeks to make an instant practice of divorce a criminal offence.

During the debate, the opposition including Congress, Trinmool Congress, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and others demanded that the Bill should be sent to a Select Committee.

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad justified the Bill saying that it was for ‘humanity’ and ‘not for religion’.

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge told the house “This is a very important bill which needs detailed study. It is also a constitutional matter. I request the bill be sent to committee”.

TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay said that all opposition is of the same opinion.

“Would like to ask those opposing the Triple Talaq Bill here that in which suraa of the holy Quran is talaq-e-biddat mentioned? This is not he vs she, these are issues of human rights violation”, BJP Leader Meenakshi Lekhi stated.
