Odisha police station set on fire over custodial death

Bhubaneswar, Feb 9: A group hundreds of men and women vandalised and set ablaze a police station in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Friday to protest the custodial death of a theft accused.

The angry mob damaged property at the Ainthapali police station ransacked several vehicles and attacked the personnel by pelting stones at them, besides torching the police station.

The incident took place after a tribal youth, Abinash Munda of Bhalupali village, held in connection with a theft case, committed suicide by hanging himself inside the police station on Thursday night.

Munda’s kin alleged that torture by the cops led to his suicide.

Director General of Police (DGP) R.P. Sharma has suspended three police officials and ordered the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) to probe the matter, news agency IANS reported.

Several policemen were injured in the attack, a police officer asserted.

The inspector-in-charge of the Ainthapali station, a sentry, and the diary-charge officer (DCO) have been suspended for their negligence.

A strong departmental action would be initiated against all responsible, Sharma further added.
