OBC creamy layer ceiling increased to Rs 8 lakh : Finance Minister

New Delhi, Aug 23: The central government on Wednesday increased the criterion of OBC creamy layer to Rs 8 lakh from Rs 6 lakh and said there will be sub categorizations within ‘Other Backward Classes’ list.

Addressing a press conference, Union Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley  revealed that it will soon set up a commission to examine sub categorizations of OBCs.

He said once the chairperson of  the Commission appointed, it will submit its report within 12 weeks.

Earlier, The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) in its report to the government recommended sub-categorisation within the OBCs into three categories i.e.OBCs into Extremely Backward Classes (Group ‘A’), More Backward Classes (Group ‘B’) and Backward Classes (Group ‘C’).

Apart from this, Jaitley also asserted that the Cabinet has approved a framework for consolidation of public sector banks.

When asked is there any possibility to demonetise the newly introduced Rs 2,000 currency notes, Union minister said that there was no discussion within government to scrap higher value denomination.

Speaking on Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu decision of offering resignation after multiple rail derailment, Jaitley said  accountability is a good system in the government.

However, he said that the final decision will be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the matter.
