NGT notice to Centre, Uttarakhand over disposal of Char Dham project debris

New Delhi, July 10 : The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday issued notices to the Narendra Modi government and Uttarakhand government and has asked them about the steps taken by them with regard to the safe disposal of debris generated during the construction of the roads in their Char Dham project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s laid the foundation of the ambitious INR 12,000-crore Char Dham all-weather project in December 2016 and the target is to complete the project ins March 2020, but the government is pushing to finish a major portion before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Environmentalists, civil society groups and NGOs approached the court and the NGT pressing fear that the dumping of debris into the rivers could change their course, causing floods during the monsoon.
