June 30, Friday : Union Cabinet Women & Child Development Minister and Senior BJP leader Maneka Gandhi said she had never heard or read a single case of suicide committed by men, after this she became a talking point.
Gandhi’s was answering to queries on a Facebook Live session. When asked about initiatives taken by the government to reduce suicides rates among men, she said “Which men have committed suicide? I have not heard/read of a single case.”
With this “anti-men” remark, Gandhi became a topic of debate and drew sharp criticism.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2015, over 1,33,623 suicides were reported in the country, out of which 91,528 (68 per cent) were by committed by men and while 42,088 were by women.
Of the 86,808 married persons who committed suicide in 2015, 64,534 (74 per cent) were men, the NCRB data asserted.
Earlier, yesterday Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan mocked Narendra Modi government’s Swachh Bharat drive by publicly urinating against the wall while his security guards were looking away during his visit to Bihar.
Interestingly, on Wednesday BJP’s senior leader also invited flak after she failed to write Swachh Bharat in Hindi.
