New Delhi, Oct 31: The nation is remembering India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 31st death anniversary.
President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress President Sonia Gandhi reached at Indira Gandhi memorial to pay tributes to the social reformer.
Devotional songs were also played at the venue. A speech made by Indira Gandhi was given on the occasion. People, who visited Shakti Sthal here, raised slogans hailing Indira Gandhi.Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders Motilal Vora, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot also paid tributes to Indira Gandhi.
Several leaders from Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee and Indian Youth Congress were also present along with Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress chief Barkha Singh at the venue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Indira Gandhi via twitter handle.
Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917 and was assassinated on October 31, 1984, few months after she ordered the Operation Blue Star in Amritsar to counter the Punjab insurgency.
She was the second longest-serving Prime Minister after her father, late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. She held the Prime Minister’s office from January 1966 to March 1977 and from January 14, 1980 till her death.
