Nation celebrates National Voters Day today; PM urges to vote, register

New Delhi, Jan 25, 2017: The seventh National Voters Day is being observed on January 25 with the theme of ‘ Empowering young and future voters’ to mark the anniversary of Election Commission of India.

Various programmes are being organised across the nation to mark the occasion and create awareness.

In the national capital, President Pranab Mukherjee will hand over the awards for best electoral practices to over 20 government officers which includes District Collectors, SPs and other officers involved in the Election Machinery.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to the nation and said that elections are celebrations of democracy, which communicate the will of the people.

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Naseem Zaidi on Tuesday said that educating future voters in India is important task before the commission as every year 20 million persons become eligible for voters rights.

The government celebrates January 25 every year as National Voter’s Day to spread awareness among citizens regarding the effective participation in the electoral process and encourage young voters to take part. The objective of the programme is also to increase enrolment of voters.

It started on January 25, 2011, to mark the foundation day of the poll panel, which was formed in 1950.
