New Delhi, 18 Oct: A new video released by friends of Rohit Vemula challenges Education Ministry’s report which questioned “Dalit status” of Rohit vemula and said the suicide was motivated by personal reasons.
“My name is Rohith Vemula. I came from Guntur. My social background…I am a Dalit from Guntur district,” said the PhD student in a video shot months before his suicide. The video was purportedly recorded inside the Hyderabad University campus where he was staying in a makeshift tent upon his suspension.
Vemula also mentioned about his upbringing and talked about his altercation with ABVP students in the video. “In 2012, ABVP filed a case against me in Chandanagar police station where I was detained for two days,” says Rohith Vemula.
The 26-year-old Rohith Vemula hanged himself to death after he with four other students were suspended by the university and barred from its hostel.
The controversial suicide of Rohith Vermula had sparked a national outrage across the country.
After many protests held over Rohith’s death, his fellow students also blamed union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya for pressurizing the university to punish the five scholars.
The Committee set up by Education Ministry under Justice A K Roopanwal Commission to probe the suicide case concluded that Rohit Vermula took the extreme step because of personal reasons and not due to caste discrimination.
The committee also accused Rohith Vemula’s mother for faking her son’s Dalit status.
It is worth mentioning that a month before his suicide, he had written to the university’s vice chancellor Appa Rao about caste discrimination and said Dalit students should be given “a rope to hang themselves”.
