Nov 11  Controversial BJP leader Sangeet Som has again reiterated demand to change the name of Muzaffarnagar to Laxmi Nagar.

“The BJP is trying to bring back the culture of India, which was deliberately changed by the Muslim rulers to end Hindutva. Therefore, the BJP is working to safeguard and retain the Indian culture by restoring their original names,” Som told news agency ANI.

BJP lawmaker from Sardhana Som also said that Muzaffarnagar was named by “Nawab Muzaffar Ali”. The claim, however, has been debunked by at least two UP government sources.

There is a growing clamour to change the names of more cities. Bharatiya Janata Party lawmakers in Uttar Pradesh Jagan Prasad Garg demanded that Agra be renamed as “Agravan” or “Agrawal”.

“About 5,000 years back the place was called Agravan, so it should be named that again. Most people from the Agrawal community live here. Agra word has no meaning, doesn’t make sense. I will meet CM over this and request for the same,” BJP MLA from Agra North, Jagan Prasad Garg said.

Sangeet Som said the state government will soon be changing names of many other cities in the state after Allahabad was named Prayagraj and Faizabad, Ayodhya.

“There will be changes (in the name of) of many other cities in the state,” he said while adding that Muzaffarnagar, which was named after Nawab Muzaffar Ali, will be changed to Laxminagar soon.

Som is a legislator from Sardhana in western UP. He said the Yogi Adityanath government was trying to correct the “distortion done by the Mughal rulers who plundered the country and harmed the Hindus”.

“We are only trying to restore the lost culture,” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh government had sent a request to the centre to rename the airports in Agra, Bareilly and Kanpur.
