In Dadimachaghadia village of Khurda district, 60 houses of Adivasi Sahi were set on fire on Monday.
Two days ago, Sujit Biswal, a stone crusher unit owner was killed while returning home with his friend in Khurda district, hitting back a retaliatory attack against the murder, the houses were set on fire.
Following the murder, police were deployed in the village to maintain law and order on Saturday night. But on Monday morning, two groups of villagers blamed each other for commiting the crime.
Later, around 300 people came to the village and resorted to violence and arson in Adivasi Sahi. They set fire to the houses reportedly on instigation of Biswal’s supporters who accused the people for the murder.
As the situation went out of control, district administration rushed four platoons of force to the area. The agitated group hurled around 50 crude bombs and stones at the police vans also. At least four policemen survived burn injuries and were admitted to Khurda district headquarters hospital.
A car and two tractors were also set on fire. It took more than an hour for four fire fighting teams to douse the fire completely. All the families of Adivasi Sahi fled after the incident.
Though Khurda Sadar Police has not identified the miscreants yet. Khurda SP Dilip Das said the police have detained nine persons and the culprits would be arrested soon.
