New Delhi, Dec 24: It has become a cliche to say that music is timeless, but when you listen to the Mohammed Rafi’s songs, you know that, cliche or not, it is true. With a range as varied as bhajans to qawwalis to ghazals to romantic songs, Rafi explored every music genre under the sky and with absolute perfection.

Born on December 24, 1924, legendary singer Mohammed Rafi began his singing career by chanting the notes that a ‘fakir’ (Muslim saint) sung in his village.

Rafi remains one of India’s greatest singers who lent his voice to Bollywood megastars including Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra and Dev Anand in his career as a successful playback artist.

He was not the jack of all trades, not even the master of one. With a voice that the Gods did not give to angels, Rafi was the master of all trades!

He died of a heart attack in Mumbai on July 31, 1980.  He has numerous hit songs to his credit including several duets with famous playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

Working with music directors like OP Nayyar, Laxmikant Pyarelal and RD Burman, Rafi delivered some evergreen hits including Yeh duniya yeh mehfil, Chura liya hai tumne, O Haseena, Tum jo mil gaye ho and Aaj mausam bada beimaan.

In a career spanning 35 years, Rafi has a wide range of songs to his credit, from classical to patriotic, mellow love songs to highly peppy numbers, qawwalis, ghazals and bhajans.

In 1944, he made his playback singing debut in Lahore with Zeenat Begum in Soniye Nee, Heeriye Nee.

He received six Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award. In 1967, he was honoured with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India.

Even today, 37 years after Rafi left us for his heavenly abode, his songs resonate with us. You can see even millennials listening to his romantic songs and his bhajans like ‘Shirdi Wale Sai Baba’ sounding off in temples.
