Modi’s government utter failure: No jobs for Indian techies abroad

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi boasts of strengthening ties with US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore  that will help the Indian economy by way of providing employment to the Indian techies but on the contrary  more and more countries are shutting their doors for providing visas to Indian Techies in fields like science, engineering and information technology.

US President Donald Trump was the first one to shut the door for skilled Indian labour by announcing his vision and mission and subsequently signing an executive order  to overhaul America’s H-1B visa program .The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in special operations that require technical expertise in specialised fields.Trump’s policy of “Buy American, Hire American” has initiated nationalistic sentiments among most of the countries who now prefer to engage and employ their own citizens rather than hiring foreign employees.

In spite of India being  a major defence ally of US, Trump signed an executive order for tightening the rules of the H-1B visa programme to stop its “abuse” and ensure that the visas are given to the “most skilled or highest paid” petitioners, which would adversely impact India’s $150 billion IT industry.
Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian stated that any serious actions taken by the Trump administration on the H-1B visa programme would be a cause of worry as majority of Indian exports in the services sector go to the US.”

While in India, Theresa May even rejected PM Narendra Modi’s calls by refusing to relax Indian visa rules  to allow more Indian people to work in the UK as part of a future trade deal.Britain’s new policy of tougher immigration policies for Indians went into effect from April 6,2017 .Indian workers hold nearly 60% of the skilled foreign worker visas in the UK .

Under the nationalistic agenda, Australia and New Zealand have introduced visa reforms to give priority to their nationals. It is embarrassing to the Modi government that after his visit to India, Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull introduced amendments in visa rules thereby banning  Indian immigrants. The most popular 457 visa , which allows foreigners to live and work in Australia for up to four years has been axed with immediate effect  and replaced with a very tough rule that requires a criminal background check  and tougher English language requirements.

New Zealand Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse specifically said that ” We are absolutely committed to the principle of Kiwis first.” The amendments in fresh  New Zealand visa policy include tough conditions for skilled and highly skilled on the basis of their criteria for earning income in India and also allowing immigrant to have a three- year limit for workers with lower skills.

The IT professionals who are migrating from United States to Canada are also finding it difficult to get good opportunities as Canada is not an IT destination. Countries like Australia, Singapore, European Union are following the path of US of not letting the foreigners to replace their citizens form getting employment in their respective countries.

To sum up Modi government is trying to hide its failure in protecting the interests of the Indian citizens who seek jobs abroad while there is no job available for them at home.
