New Delhi, Jan 30: President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other leaders paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on the 70th death anniversary of the father of the nation.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, General Bipin Rawat, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba & Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa also made their presence here.
A prayer meeting also took place at Rajghat in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi with his favourite song vaishnav jan being sung. It was attended by President, Prime Minister, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Vice President and other dignitaries.
Earlier, in a day the President took twitter to remember Mahatma Gandhi.
“On Martyrs’ Day, we gratefully remember Mahatma Gandhi and the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed their all for our Independence,” he said in a tweet.
The Prime Minister also tweeted “We bow to all those martyrs who have sacrificed themselves in service of our nation. We will always remember their courage as well as dedication towards the nation.”
On this day in 1948 Bapu Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse.
Gandhi was the pioneer of non-violence, peace and practiced it throughout his life. His struggles brought independence to a country which had been under British rule for about 200 years.
