New Delhi, Jan 29 : The Modi government, who came to power promising to construct Ram Temple in Ayodhya has sought Supreme Court permission to hand over the “undisputed” land in Ayodhya to the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas, so as to build a temple.
The union government has taken such a move because the 2019 Lok Sabha elections are round the corner and recently BJP has lost assembly elections in four states and Modi government is under immense pressure from right-wing groups, its own members as well as allies like the Shiv Sena to bring an ordinance to enable the temple construction.
This is a move to pacify RSS as BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said that the move was much awaited and a “welcome one”.
The Ayodhya case has been pending for the last 70 years but the ruling Modi government is under immense pressure from right-wing groups, its own members as well as allies like the Shiv Sena to bring an ordinance to enable the temple construction.
“The centre is not touching the disputed area where the title suit is pending,” said Prakash Javadekar. “We want to give the land back to the Janambhoomi Nyas so that they can build a temple. The BJP always believed that the temple has already been built and it has to be made magnificent,” he added.
The main Muslim litigant, Iqbal Ansari, said he did not have any objection to the move by the Modi government.
The Supreme Court was to hear the Ayodhya title suit today but the hearing was cancelled because one of the judges, Justice SA Bobde, was not available for medical reasons.
