Minorities fear India disintegrating under Modi as Bajrang Dal gets armed

Anil Joseph Thomas Couto

The attack on minorities by Hindu fringe elements have compelled Archbishop’s of country’s capital New Delhi and Financial capital Mumbai,of expressing fear about the growing threat the minority communities are facing under the Narendra Modi’s rule amid the increasing number of camps being organised by Bajrang Dal across the country for providing arms training to its youth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has been begging for votes in the name of Ram Mandir and securing safety for Hindus in India from Love Jihad, where Hindus are in majority.

The same Saffron party leaders’ are objecting to the letter of Archbishop of Delhi Anil Couto which is addressed to all parish priests in the capital, in which he called for a year-long prayer campaign to save India from the “turbulent political atmosphere” threatening democracy and secularism. He urged all priests to “pray for the country” ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election. The letter doesn’t root for any candidate or party.

BJP leaders are making a hue and cry over the letter and accused Archbishop of undermining Indian interests and working with the Vatican to tarnish Narendra Modi government’s image. Saffron party leaders said the letter threatens the democratic principles of the Constitution and secular fabric.

The argument put forward by the BJP and Hindu group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) raises more questions as BJP leaders have approached in the past several religious persons (deras)for securing votes.

BJP has been giving political patronage to groups such Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other fringe groups for mobilizing voters in the name of religion as over the years, RSS has been on a mission to establish Hindu Rashtra.RSS Sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat not only controls the RSS but indirectly exercises authority over all the affiliate organisations, including the BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and ABVP.

Any prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP must have a requisite qualification of promoting Hindu supremacy and accepting Hitler and Mussolini as their role models due to the fact that RSS is the ideological parent of the Bharatiya Janata Party, whose founders idealized both fascism and Nazism.

Rakesh Sinha, an ideologue from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), said:”This is a direct attack by the church on Indian secularism and democracy, and this is a direct intervention by the Vatican as these bishops are appointed by the pope. Their accountability is not to India but to the pope.”

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, “India is one of those countries where minorities are safe.”

It is pertinent to remind PM Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh that there have been innumerable incidents where minority people have been targeted. President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) Cardinal Oswald Gracias said that there is “growing anxiety” among minority communities “because the government is not acting enough” to protect them.

When political class fails to unite a country, judiciary plays its part but when Judiciary is threatened, Religious leaders play a significant role in taking the country forward.

India’s ruling party has abandoned rule of law and encouraged the culture of mob violence thus threatening the fundamental features of democracy. Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has been providing arms training to its workers in the name of protecting Hindus from love Jihad to ‘tackle anti-national, love jihad elements’ (which they perceive as anti-nationalism).’

On one side PM Modi promotes his love for B R Ambedkar and the Constitution of India but on the other hand, he allows VHP to create a parallel army which is against the Constitution and have nurtured Bigotry resulting in making the society intolerant.

Defending the arms training imparted to its members, Bajrang Dal District Convenor Devi Singh Sondhia said “This is a routine camp which we organise annually to tackle anti-national, love jihad elements. This a practice going on since 1984.”

Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Rajnish Agrawal maintained that anyone could organise a self-defence camp but he could not specify who had given permission for the camp.

Digvijaya Singh’s son and MLA from Raghogarh, Jaivardhan Singh. In a tweet, he said,“Surprisingly, they are imparting training of becoming murderers in the name of Rashtravaad. Our Army is protecting our nation, we don’t need organisation who hold such violent camps.”

More so if anyone is found criticizing the current political dispensation, they are labeled as anti-national,”terrorists”, “perpetrators of sedition”.

Human Rights Watch, a New-York based NGO, in its 2018 report on India said that the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) hardly did anything to protect its minority instead it “publicly promoted Hindu supremacy and ultra-nationalism at the expense of fundamental rights for all Indians.”There is a rising threat of “vigilante violence aimed at religious minorities, marginalized communities, and critics of the government—often carried out by groups claiming to support the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”.

There is a probability of a civil war like situation in India with increasing incidents of atrocities on minority communities including Dalits and the world will isolate India and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name will go down in the history for disintegrating the country.
