Raipur, Jan 28 : At a farmers’ rally in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, Congress President Rahul Gandhi promised to ensure guaranteed minimum income for the poor across the country, much like the system of social security in the US, if the grand old party comes to power in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“If voted to power in 2019, the Congress government will ensure minimum universal basic income to the poor,no government in the world has ever taken such a decisiong,This is a historic decision.” Gandhi said at a farmers’ rally in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur this evening.
He said people had to stand in a queue during demonetisation. Earlier, UPA government guaranteed 100-day work under MGNREGA. We introduced RTI. Cash will be directly transfered to farmers instead of subsidies as a sort of monthly income support.
“This means, each poor person in India will have minimum income. This means there will be no hungry, poor people in India,” added Gandhi.
“We cannot build a new India while millions of our brothers & sisters suffer the scourge of poverty. If voted to power in 2019, the Congress is committed to a Minimum Income Guarantee for every poor person, to help eradicate poverty & hunger. This is our vision & our promise,” tweeted the Congress chief, whose party was targeted by the BJP for focusing on welfare measures instead of economic growth during its decade in power.
Rahul said, “Congress introduced Green Revolution, food security.Have returned Tata land that was lying unutilised for years. Every crop grown here would go to dining tables across the world — be it America or Japan. We brought in Green Revolution and worked on food security.”
He further accused PM Modi and BJP of creating two Indias — one of Rafale scam and industrialist-friends and other of poor farmers
“BJP and Modi even diluted land acquisition bill and guaranteed four times price of land to farmers and if industrialists did not start work in 10 years, the land would go back to farmers. If land is taken from farmers, the panchayat would have to be taken into confidence,” Rahul said.
