Manipur Election Results 2017: CM Ibobi Wins, Congress marginally ahead of BJP

Manipur, March 11: The ruling Congress is fighting to retain its 15-year-old stronghold in Manipur.

In a close contest for 60 seats, BJP and Congress are giving a tough competition to each other.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of the Congress won in Thoubal constituency, defeating rights activist and PRJA party nominee Irom Sharmila, who got fewer than 100 votes.

The three-time Chief Minister won comfortably with over 15,000 votes. Leitanthem Basanta Singh of BJP came second in the votes.

Counting of votes polled in the two-phase Manipur assembly election at 12 centres across the northeastern state today is underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The first phase of the Manipur assembly election held on March 4 saw 84 percent voter while the second phase of the polls saw 86 per cent of voters turning out at the polling stations spread around 7 district.
