The police fired in self-defense in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur where five farmers were killed last year, says the report of an investigation set up by the state government.
The report avoid blaming three suspended senior officers, including the then collector Swatantra Kumar Singh and SP O P Tripathi, rather blamed weak communications of police and state administration “for failing to maintain law and order”.
Farmers were protesting demanding better prices for their crops and a loan waiver but the protest took a violent turn in June last year as the police opened fire on the activists.
The commission was asked to probe five points given by the government and submit its report within three months from the day of publication of the notification. Who was responsible for the incident, whether the district and police administration took appropriate steps during the incident and suggestions to stop such incidents in future were the five points emphasised by the government.
