Mamata takes jibe at BJP’s ‘Rath Yatra’, Calls it ‘Danga Yatra’

Kolkata, Dec 28: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) request for permission to conduct a ‘Rath Yatra’ in the state, calling it as a ‘Danga Yatra’.

“ISKCON does Rath Yatras, they carry out Jagannath Rath Yatra, they don’t carry out yatras to kill the people”, she said at an event in South 24 Parganas district’s Sundarban area.

The West Bengal Chief Minister further stated “Those who carry out yatras to kill people indulge in ‘Danga Yatras’. There are yatras for Lord Krishna & Lord Jagarnath, we take part in those rath yatras“.

The Trinamool Congress government has denied the permission to BJP to hold a series of rallies in the state, saying there was “grave apprehension of major breach of peace and communal violence during and in the aftermath” of the event.

Over the denial of permission, the saffron party approached the Calcutta High Court on December 17.

The single the bench of Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty set aside government’s order on December 20, and allowed the BJP to hold three different rallies in West Bengal.

Following this, the division bench of Calcutta HC on December 21 quashed the earlier judgment, and put on hold the proposed Rath Yatra of BJP.

Later, the Bharatiya Janata Party moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court division bench order.

However, the apex refused urgent hearing of the matter even though it was already on winter vacation.

The BJP was originally scheduled to carry out three Rath Yatra rallies from north Bengal’s Cooch Behar, South 24 Parganas district’s Gangasagar and Birbhum district’s temple town of Tarapith, flagged off by party chief Amit Shah on December 7, 9 and 14 respectively.
