Kolkata, June 11: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday unveiled the bust of noted Bengali reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar at the Hare School ground on College Street in Kolkata. This comes after the bust of Vidyasagar was vandalised and smashed at Vidyasagar College on May 14 in clashes during the road show of BJP chief Amit Shah.
After paying floral tributes to the 19-century social reformer at a ceremonial programme, Trinamool Congress supremo Banerjee is slated to walk on foot from the Hare School ground to the Vidyasagar college on Bidhan Sarani, where the statue will be re-installed.
The West Bengal CM was accompanied by senior state ministers as well as celebrities, actors and dignitaries from various fields. Posters featuring Banerjee’s and Vidyasagar’s photos were put up at the event, with the slogan “Bengal’s icon, Bengal’s pride.”
The TMC had blamed the saffron party for the desecration of the renowned Bengali icon’s statue during BJP Chief Amit Shah’s road show.
