New Delhi, July 1 : The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to West Bengal Government on a contempt plea filed by brother of BJP Youth Wing Convenor Priyanka Sharma who was arrested for sharing a caricature of Mamata Banerjee on Facebook, alleging despite the Apex court’s orders for her immediate release, she wasn’t released by police immediately.
Priyanka Sharma, BJP Yuva Morcha leader was arrested in May 2019 for sharing a photoshopped image of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her Facebook profile. 25-year-old Priyanka Sharma was slapped with non-bailable charges by the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Howrah and was sent to judicial custody for two weeks.
Sharma, whose Facebook profile says that she is the Howrah district club cell convener for the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was arrested for allegedly sharing a picture of Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra at the red carpet of the recent Met gala in New York, and had Mamata Banerjee’s face superimposed on that of the actor’s.
