Malegaon blast accused Lt Col Purohit out on bail after 9 years

Lt Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit

New Delhi, Aug 23, 2017: After Supreme Court of India granted interim bail on August 22, Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit walked out of jail after nine years behind bars as the prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

Army officers received Lt Col Purohit at Taloja jail near Mumbai from where he was taken to Army unit in Colaba.

The completion of formalities took a couple of days, which is why Purohit wasn’t released immediately after being granted bail in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

A convoy of army vehicles took him out of the jail. Some of his relatives also accompanied him.

Purohit had moved top court after a Bombay High Court order dismissed his bail plea. He was arrested in 2008. He told the SC that he was acting as an army mole and was not involved in terrorist activity.

However, Purohit, during the trial, claimed that he was there to spy on the group members and had kept his seniors in the loop on all developments.

Purohit was in jail from last nine years as an accused of providing RDX for the bomb that claimed the lives of sex people in a bomb blast on September 29, 2008 at Malegaon.
