Magnitude 7.0 quake hits Indonesia’s Moluccas islands


An earthquake with a magnitude 7.0 struck 173 kilometres north-north-west of the city of Ternate in the Moluccas islands in Indonesia on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Update: The USGS says there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, which follows a 7.2 magnitude quake on December 29 in the same area. It was also downgraded to magnitude 6.6.

“Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake,” the USGS said in a statement.
