Punjab, 25 Nov: The Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan accepted the resignation of Amarinder Singh after he tendered his resignation from the House.
“I have accepted his resignation with effect from November 23,” Lok sabha Speaker said.
Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha had announced his resignation while protesting against the November 10 Supreme Court decision on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal water sharing agreement.
He expressed that he is quitting as a mark of protest for the “injustice” meted out to the people of Punjab.
The SYL agreement has emerged as a major political problem in Punjab. Singh, a former Chief Minister, is leading his party’s campaign to take over the power from the SAD-BJP alliance, which has been ruling for a decade.
Singh was elected to Parliament after defeating BJP heavyweight and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley from the prestigious Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.
